"Concerning incidents"

About: Royal Jubilee Maternity services / Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

(as a parent/guardian),

My preterm baby was admitted to the neonatal unit of the Royal Maternity Hospital. During his stay, I was offered a room so that I could see my baby at night and to ease my exhaustion from going back and forth to the hospital. They booked me into one of the available rooms in the neonatal unit. However, on the day that I was going to stay in one of the rooms, two member of staff called my attention and told me that it was very unusual to stay in one of the rooms. I was very shocked as I had been informed that once I booked the room, I could stay there overnight. They wouldn’t let me stay, so I was forced to go home.

Another incident during my baby's stay in the neonatal unit involved a student who was on duty, who I felt was not being supervised well by  member of staff. This made me anxious every time they were on shift. There was one incident where the student gave medication to my son's feeding tube, and it did not go to the stomach; instead, it just got stuck in the tube.

In another incident with them, the member of staff and the student were on the same shift, and while they were on their break, one of the members of staff who relieved them found an aspirate in my baby’s tube that was blood-like and unusual. I was told to inform the previous member of staff to check on it, but they never checked the aspirate of my son.

These incidents were very concerning, and I don’t want this to happen to anyone.

If you’d like to discuss your concerns further, Lisa would be very happy to speak with you directly at lisa.darrah@belfasttrust.hscni.net.

Thank you again for helping us improve the care we provide.

Warm regards,
Emma
