A very close family friend was recently admitted to South West Acute Hospital. She was in her 90s and in addition to the presenting health issue she also lives with dementia.
On her previous admission she received fantastic support from the dementia companions so she was familiar with the team. On her most recent admission, the dementia companion that she was most familiar with supported her and even though she couldn't remember his name she knew who he was. He brought great comfort & support to her and to her family.
Sadly she passed away, but it was so reassuring to all of her friends and family to have had that support at this end of life journey.
The dementia companions provide an extremely vital service to people living with dementia who are admitted to hospital and the continuity that they can provide is so important in dementia care.
