Following an initial consultation in ENT and an MRI I'm disappointed that no further action is to be taken regarding a Parotid Gland cyst.
I realise it's a small cyst and diagnosed as benign, but it's a foreign body which causes me variable discomfort from time to time.
Also, the outcome summary from the initial consultation states that once the MRI was done I would be seen back in Clinic to discuss whether or not to remove the cyst.So imagine my surprise and consternation to receive a letter stating that the cyst should not be causing me any pain but if it enlarges and becomes problematic then get back in touch...!
So, no follow up appt as mentioned to discuss further. I have also read online via other NHS trusts the following....
Page 2 of 3 Patient Information Why remove the lump? • Although most lumps are benign, we recommend that they are removed as they can continue to grow and may become cancerous (malignant) after many years. • It is best to remove lumps as early as possible. Larger lumps are more difficult to remove. • Removing the lump allows us to examine it under a microscope and confirm exactly what it is.
I've read in several places that excising a larger lump can be more problematic.
It's taken over 6 months to get to this point only to be told to go away and come back if and when it gets bigger. Do I feel fobbed off ....yes, I'm sorry to say that I do. I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the state of the NHS. I'm sure you think this is a trivial matter but to me it's going to be a constant worry, as it has been for the last 6 months, wondering if it will get larger, turn cancerous and be too late once this happens for treatment.
