"Endometriosis Surgery & Care"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Endometriosis Service

(as the patient),

I've been under the care of the BSGE within the QUEH, under two endometriosis specialists Dr Hawthorn & Dr Datsun as well as the wonderfully kind & understanding specialist nurse, Rosie.

I was diagnosed with Endometriosis in Oct 22, following a hospital admission & resulting MRI. I was then referred on to the specialist endometriosis team within QUEH. I had a difficult time with diagnosis and implications of diagnosis and Rosie was there to listen to all my concerns.

During the first 18 months of treatment I felt listened to, and respected as I processed my difficult diagnosis, including support in egg retrieval at the Glasgow Royal, and the challenges that come alongside fertility treatments.

Mid December 2023, I had excision surgery for my stage four endometriosis, the whole process I felt I was able to ask questions and clarify any points both my surgeons and with Rosie.

The surgery was as successful as it could be, I had a briefing with the consultant the day following my surgery. Rosie, the specialist nurse then took her time out of her day to visit me on the ward the second day of my stay and went through the briefing again once I had a chance to gather my thoughts & questions. I just wanted to highlight how wonderful the care I received and the support I've consistently from Rosie over a really difficult period of my life.

Since surgery in Dec 23, I have received regular follow up appointments, which have addressed any medical questions following surgery, my recovery and living with endometriosis.

Recently, I've had my last scheduled follow-up appointment with Rosie as it's been two years post surgery. Throughout the last 4 years of my life, Rosie has been there to support me, through our appointments or just one email away to address any concerns or questions if forgotten to ask about, or sometimes just to talk about the mundane things that endometriosis can effect.

I know Womens Reproductive Health and Gynaecological services have long waitlists, and are under a lot of pressure but the care I received has been nothing short of exemplary and I couldn't thank Rosie, Dr Hawthorn & Dr Datsun (and all the other many nurses, and health practitioners along the way) more.

Dear Hugo1993,

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. It means a great deal that you have taken the time to reflect on your journey and acknowledge the care you received.

Reading about the challenges you faced with diagnosis and treatment, and how Rosie, Dr Hawthorn, and Dr Datsun supported you throughout, is truly heartening. Endometriosis can have such a profound impact on every aspect of life, and your words highlight the importance of compassionate, person-centred care. I am so pleased to hear that you felt listened to, respected, and supported at every stage – from those first difficult conversations, through surgery and recovery, and even during the fertility treatment process.

Your comments about Rosie’s kindness and availability, whether in appointments or by email, really capture what we strive for in our service: to be there for patients not only clinically, but emotionally, through the ups and downs. I will make sure Rosie and the whole team see your feedback – it will mean so much to them to know the difference they have made.

We know that gynaecology and women’s health services face significant pressures and long waiting lists, and your recognition of the team’s efforts despite these challenges is deeply appreciated. Your experience reminds us why we continue to work hard to improve access and maintain the highest standards of care.

Thank you again for sharing such a thoughtful and generous account. On behalf of the entire team, I wish you continued health and wellbeing as you move forward.

Warm regards,

Nikki
