"Children’s day surgery"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Day surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

My child was recently in for a day surgery procedure in the Royal Hospital for Children. All of the staff we encountered were brilliant in the lead up to going to theatre. They made my anxious child feel at ease during a scary time. Especially one of the HCAs, who was outstanding with children and really made my child’s time there less scary.

The only negative was  after they came out of theatre the recovery wasn’t the greatest - nurses came over once to do obs, then after that you're just ignored, having to ask for drinks for your child, no food offered to them despite been fasted for nearly 12 hours. However some children were given toast and sandwiches. Not sure if the parents asked but it should be something offered to all children before going home. Or make it clear that parents should bring food for after the procedure.

Hi Lyracz49

Thank you for taking your time to leave feedback on your recent visit to day surgery.

Firstly, I would like to apologise for your experience at the recovery stage of your child's surgery. This is not the level of care we aim to deliver and your child should have been offered something to eat and drink following their surgery. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and I will ensure that all staff are aware of the need to offer food and drink frequently to all patients and will continue to monitor this. Again, I am truly sorry that this happened to yourself and your child.

Thank you also for your kind comments regarding the care received from staff while waiting for theatre as we strive to make the journey as stress free as possible.

I hope your child is now recovering well at home and if you wish to discuss this further please contact me on - suzanne.pearson@nhs.scot

Kind regards

Suzanne Pearson
