"Genuine Care and Compassion"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Gynaecology (Ward 32) Royal Alexandra Hospital / Theatres, Recovery and Anaesthetics

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Ward 32, Gynaecology, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley, after being told I had a suspected Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).

On arrival, the staff acted quickly and professionally — the first step was to remove the copper coil I had fitted four months earlier. I was then started on both oral and IV antibiotics, and the infection was carefully monitored through regular observations. Despite everyone’s best efforts, my infection didn’t improve, and it was decided by the consultant that I would need surgery to remove the infection.

Before surgery, everything was fully explained to me — what would happen while I was under anaesthetic and what to expect afterwards. The operation turned out to be longer and more complicated than anticipated. My right fallopian tube had to be removed as the infection had completely destroyed it. There had been a plan to remove the ovary as well, but the infection had fused it to my bladder and bowel, so this wasn’t possible.

After surgery, I had a drain in my side for a day to remove as much of the infection as possible. My treatment continued with IV antibiotics twice a day and oral antibiotics for the rest of my stay. Throughout, the staff closely monitored my progress through regular observations and blood tests.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Health Care Support Workers, nursing staff, Junior Doctors, and especially Rebecca, the Senior Charge Nurse, for the outstanding care and compassion I received. I felt genuinely seen, heard, and supported throughout my time on the ward.

A special mention goes to Debs and Claire, who went above and beyond with their kindness, empathy, and professionalism. Their care and reassurance made a real difference during a very worrying time.

Rebecca, the Senior Charge Nurse, showed exceptional leadership and compassion, ensuring that patients were listened to and treated with respect. The teamwork among the staff was excellent, and I always felt safe and cared for.

While I was disappointed by the consultant’s bedside manner and found their approach dismissive at times, I cannot fault the dedication, empathy, and professionalism of the rest of the Ward 32 team. Their genuine concern and kindness helped me through a very challenging experience.

Thank you to everyone on Ward 32 for your care, understanding, and humanity. You made me feel truly cared for when I needed it most.
