I recently attended the MAU after suddenly becoming unwell with severe thunderclap headaches, rib and back pain, a rapidly spreading rash, and fever. I waited around seven hours in the waiting area, which was quite difficult given my pain and discomfort. The space was small and very busy, which made it uncomfortable. It would be a great improvement if a staff member could check in periodically with those waiting, providing updates, drinks, or small refreshments. The chairs were also very uncomfortable for such a long wait, especially when feeling so unwell.
However, once I was taken onto the unit, my experience completely changed for the better. I was admitted promptly, assessed quickly by a doctor, and started on treatment for both viral and bacterial causes with antibiotics, antivirals, and fluids. I was offered a drink and pain relief promptly. I was soon moved into my own room due to suspected meningitis.
The care I received was exceptional. I felt very vulnerable and nervous, especially as it was my first time away from my two-year-old, but every member of staff made me feel safe, cared for, and reassured. The nurses and doctors showed outstanding compassion and professionalism throughout.
The following day, I had a lumbar puncture which confirmed viral meningitis. I continued treatment with antivirals and fluids. Although I experienced nausea due to the IV medication, the nurse caring for me was quick to respond and provided everything I needed. I genuinely felt safe and well looked after throughout my stay.
I am deeply grateful to every member of staff in the MAU for their care, compassion, and empathy. They even took into account my vegetarian diet, which I appreciated.
My only suggestion for improvement, which I believe applies NHS-wide, would be to enhance the quality and nutritional value of hospital meals. I found myself craving something fresh like fruit and only managed to eat a roll in the morning during my stay.
Overall, I am extremely thankful for the care I received — it was second to none
