"Treatment for Prostate Cancer"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Radiotherapy Dr Gray's Hospital / Urology (Bladder and Urinary problems) General Practices in Grampian

(as the patient),

I visited my Maryhill GP practice to have a PSA test following the advice given by Sir Chris Hoy. I was surprised that my PSA level was slightly high for my age and was forwarded for a second test 7 weeks later. This was followed by a MRI scan which indicated that there may be a problem worthy of a biopsy to confirm that I had a mild form T2. I met with a Consultant who offered me options to consider and I opted for EBRT. I also had a meeting with the Oncology Consultant who organised my 2.5 week treatment and my stay at Clan Haven.

Dear Hapjk48,

Goodness, I think Sir Chris Hoy would be delighted to know that sharing his story had made a difference. Hopefully you sharing yours here today will do similar (with slightly less reach, though each NHS Grampian Care Opinion story does get approximately 200 reads - so fingres crossed). Other than that, it’s so good to hear you took a proactive and courageous approach to the advice and went to the GP – it would have been so easy not to! It sounds, from your story, like you’ve taken a serious situation in your stride though I’m sure it was, and still is, a very worrying time for you.

I will pass this to the team at Maryhill Practice (most of the GP Practices in Grampian are independently run and don't regularly access Care OpInion), who I’m sure will be glad to hear you appreciated their swift action, which led to clear guidance and a treatment plan with the Oncology Team. My colleagues from the other teams mentioned in your story will share this with their teams too.

Take care,

Kirsten
