"Friendly, reassuring and kind"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

I had surgery 9 years ago to remove a cancerous tumour from my bowel, which due to the complexity of where it was, necessitated an Ileostomy (Stoma) being in place for 8 months, then reversed back to normal plumbing. I had already left a story of all this back at that time on this platform, around the excellent care and superb attention back then, so no need to cover that in detail again now.

As a result of that, however, I required to get follow-on surveillance Colonoscopies, and I attended QMH in Dunfermline for this, my 4th since the first discovered the initial tumour.

Once again, I cannot speak highly enough of all the NHS staff I engaged with, coming along somewhat apprehensive, not even for the procedure itself, but for fear of what might be found. However, when I got taken in, I was greeted initially by one of the nurses, Shannon, who was brilliantly friendly and cheerful to put me at ease with general chat, then in the room by the Endoscopist who would carry out the Colonoscopy, Lynn, who was also super friendly, reassuring and kind by putting me even more at ease, and the other nurse was also there who was called Mary was very smiley too!

The procedure was largely painless, but with Entonox (Gas n Air) to call upon if needed, but I rarely used it, such was the care and skill of Lynn. She discovered some polyps which were removed skilfully at the time with the assistance of Shannon & Mary and sent for analysis, but assured me there was nothing concerning her as far as tumours were concerned, which was a huge relief, as you can never be complacent having had cancer,

To summarise, the NHS gets a lot of bad press these days...but it is most definitely not due to wonderful women like these, who are indeed salt of the earth and angels for sure.

Thank you all if you see this- you deserve all the praise coming your way and much more!

Dear K Dawg

Thank you for sharing your story with us it was very humbling. It must have been difficult for you to attended due to your previous history. But I was extremely heartened to read that this journey was a positive one. Also how understanding the team were and made every effort to support you in a caring and compassionate way.

I will take great please in passing on your very kind comments to the team especially those you have named. Thank you again for sharing your story. I hope you have recovered well

Kindest regards

Ann Walker SCN
