Our son was born via emergency c-section in Ninewells hospital. We felt the pre birth care was very good. In particular the anaesthetics doctors involved in our care were excellent especially Natalia. However post op my wife required a catheter due to the epidural. We were told this had to stay in for a week and she had an appointment to rv it after that week as she failed her TWOC a few hours after delivery. This information was incorrect and the catheter should not have remained for such a long time. This caused my wife to develop a UTI and have lots of issues peeing in the days after her C section and feel this was entirely unnecessary. We attended for another reason and were told the catheter could be removed which it was after 5 days.
We also were followed up by the midwives in community but they didn't identify that the catheter should have been removed despite being asked. We also had concerns about our sons arms as they appeared very swollen. This was raised with our health visitor and the midwives who all assured us it was normal. We then spoke with a consultant from another health board by chance and they said it was not normal and required urgent investigation. This was done and has identified a serious medical condition that our son had (primary intestinal lymphangiectasia). This has required treatment and feel it would have been missed if we had not by chance spoken with a friend who happened to be a consultant
