"Ultrasound Scan - Language Uses"

About: New Victoria Hospital / X-rays and scans

(as the patient),

I went for a liver scan early November. Upon arrival in the scan room I laid on the bed and the staff member asked me to pull up my top and move my leggings down to my hips and said just like for a baby scan

I replied with saying I’ve never had a baby scan so wouldn’t know what that would be.

As a female I’m particularly aware that there are millions of women everywhere who are struggling with fertility issues, baby loss and complications which leave trauma from child birth and pregnancy. I know that the comment wasn’t meant to be insensitive but if it had been said to the wrong person, it could have been devastating.

I wanted to raise this to ask that staff be made aware that they should not make assumptions about what patients have experienced. There are many ways that patients can have things explained that don’t involve referencing something like that and possibly more gender neutral.
