"The unsatisfactory and unprofessional treatment my mum received"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Accident and emergency Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Acute medical admissions (AMU) Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / General surgery Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Healthcare for Older People

(as a relative),

2 main incidents, mum was admitted with a cut leg, it was decided after couple days, she was no longer safe to return home, she has a Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia diagnosis. So we were waiting for a 4 week respite place to become available.

During mum's stay, she was moved 4 times, very unsettling and confusing. Eventually I agreed to a placement nowhere near where her family live. I spoke to a member of the discharge team, and was assured mum would be going to the home thay day. I’m self employed and had to cancel clients. I drove the 40 mins, feeling very emotional, only to arrive to be told by the home, the hospital had changed their mind, and it would be tomorrow!

This was a very stressful and emotional day for me and I would like to know why I wasn’t informed. I spent half and hour in the new home seeing where mum would eventually be. The manager was lovely and we talked about mum's health etc.

During the conversation the manager mentioned the incident. I had no idea what they meant, they then showed me the notes from the hospital. I felt physically sick on reading about an incident of which I have no knowledge.

Apparently my mum awoke and was aggressive and instantly ripped out a patient’s catheter! Then she couldn't be calmed down and security was called and it took 4 people to pin my mum down on her bed. As you can imagine this is awful to read, but beggars belief why I wasn’t informed of this. Bearing in mind I have power of attorney and my mum doesn’t have capacity, I can’t begin to imagine how scared she was. My mum is 4ft 11 and weighs just over 7 stone.

I would most definitely like some answers to my mum's treatment and serious lack of communication for a lady who can no longer speak for herself.

I am so sorry to hear all of this. Unfortunately I am not able to see any details of your mother on this platform and wonder if you would like to contact me directly on AMU to have a look into this?

Best wishes
