"Struggling mentally during pregnancy"

About: Community Mental Health / Perinatal & Infant Mental Health Community Nurses (Perth & Kinross)

(as the patient),

During an unexpected pregnancy I struggled mentally accepting the pregnancy and was becoming increasingly low in mood as well as having periods of manic episodes that would last for days at a time. This was not just in the pregnancy this was how I spent most of my adult life.

I felt overwhelmed by this but learned to live in this up and down way. I started to see a peri natal psychologist who asked me if I’d like to see a psychiatrist during my pregnancy and I agreed to this.

I had a lot of support during my pregnancy from a mental health nurse, psychologist and psychiatrist aswell as my midwife. I was diagnosed with bipolar type 2 and not shocked by this I felt relieved in my new diagnosis as I always knew there was something there.

I have struggled my whole adult life with making questionable decisions, my mood, my behaviour, I’m impulsive, talkative and that’s just a few to name the least.. but medication has changed my life.

I am now more neutral and stable the most I’ve ever been thanks to the help of my team. Without this support I wouldn’t be in this position and I am forever grateful.
