"Emergency gallbladder removal"

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital / Accident and emergency Stoke Mandeville Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I had been in pain for 10 months waiting for my operation on the waiting list. It got so painful that an ambulance came out and took me to A&E, where I spent 10 hours in a hospital corridor.

I was then moved up to ward 18, where I was told I would have an op that day after waiting all day for the op was told it would not happen till the next day now. I had been nil by mouth for 48 hours .

The next day I went for my op. It went really well but my breathing and sats were really low so was put on oxygen. I was kept in for a week.

During this time, I experienced so many mistakes. I was told I would be going for a CT scan with dye scan on my lungs. The patient opposite 30 minutes later had a porter come for them and fitted a canular to take them for a scan. They were complaining, saying I think you have the wrong person, I think you need the lady in the bed opposite, they was insistent they had the right person and this patient went for the scan.

Later on when my partner came, he questioned the nurses and said I think you have taken the wrong person, the nurse was really rude to him .

Then an hour later the doctors came and said they had taken the wrong person and that they were really sorry.

I then went for the scan and they couldn't do my bloods as I had no name tag on my wrist.

I had to wait for my wrist tag to be printed.

I realized over time that my bp raced up whenever I stood up. I asked for my bp to be done sitting and standing, this was dismissed by a nurse and I had to be assertive and demand they did it. It went off the scale.

There was two nurses on my ward who wanted a blood gas test done and was not happy with my discharge. The doctors told me it was not necessary, it was because I had just had an opand at 10.30pm moved me to another ward.

The next morning I was discharged, but before my discharge they couldn't find my doctors notes and they had been left on my bed for 12 hours. I had a good read of them and they said a lot different to what I'd been told. I was made to feel I was causing problems and could not show my concerns. I was sent home the next day still with high bp and very breathless.

After being home for 12 hours my daughter realized I still had my canular in my arm, and that a nurse had taken off my stockings, when my letter said I needed to keep them on .

If it wasn't for the 2 exceptional nurses I had, I don't know wat I'd have done as when they weren't on shift I felt alarmed and stressed.
