My wife is Diabetic and was referred to the Podiatry Service at Knockbreda Health Centre as a registered patient for periodic 'foot inspection'.
June '25 we noticed a 'lesion' on her right foot. GP's assessment was that it was a Squamous Cell Carcinoma and made a 'Red Flag' reference to hospital for 'excision' of same. During a prolonged waiting for Hospital response my daughter and I researched the issue and 'became aware of Diabetic Foot Ulcer' condition. Whilst I was aware that any lesion on the foot of a Diabetic is potentially serious it was NOT highlighted as an alternative issue to the Carcinoma diagnosis.
My daughter independtly made contact with Podiatry Service and obtained an immediate appointment as above. The Podiatrists - John and principally Cheryll - considered ,from appearance, that the lesion was more likely a 'Diabetic Foot Ulcer' and started treatment on that basis. A subsequent Biopsy later indicated that no cancer cells were detected! By this time the Ulcer was showing great improvement - in size and appearance - due to the excellent attention/treatment/dressings of the Podiatry staff especially Cheryll. At this point in November -25 the Ulcer has practically completely healed!
I cannot praise the attention received, knowledge, experience, professionalism and the sympathetic consideration for the patient of the staff in this unit. Appointments were always on time with SMS reminders. There was an excellent rapport/relationship developed between patient and practitioner. I found the 'journey' most informative and it will be beneficial to me and my wife going forward. This unit is a credit to the 'much maligned' - and at times correctly so - Nat. Health Service. THANK YOU
"a credit to the NHS"
