I attended A&E at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy with a few days of a positive pregnancy test and an onset of bleeding and pain. I was given self care advice and the number for the early pregnancy clinic should I have any concerns.
Over 12 hours later I phoned the number given due to the level of pain and was told to attend ward 24. I attended and was given a scan, bloods and told their was no evidence of ectopic pregnancy, HCG bloods were normal and to go home on Co-codamol and an urgent detailed ultrasound would be organised as an outpatient.
The next evening the pain increased, the swelling in my tummy was evident and I had bruising starting on my stomach.
I phoned NHS 24, was seen at out of hours and sent back to ward 24. A Nurse attended to me, they said there seems to be confusion about what your scan showed, your are not pregnant. I told them I’m very aware I’m not pregnant given the events of the last 24 hours. They wanted to know what symptoms had changed. I felt like I was having to defend myself.
The registrar came to see me with a doctor and a medical student, I was not asked if it was ok for the medical student to be present.
The registrar proceeded again to tell me I’m not pregnant in what I felt was an arrogant way. They questioned who had given me the diagnosis previously of endometriosis and what basis they gave me this, which I found bizarre they were questioning a clinical lead who had decided this. They proceeded to tell me hysterectomy is the only way to cure endometriosis. I didn’t need this interrogation. I needed help with pain.
The registrar finally said I would be in overnight to help with the pain. The next morning a doctor came and told me again, I’m not pregnant which I already knew. An ultrasound scan would be performed as an inpatient instead of an outpatient which I was grateful for.
The ultrasound scan was clear and again, the same doctor came and told me I was not pregnant. I could go home.
Given the fact that I had a positive pregnancy test, followed by bleeding, pain and a negative test suggests I’m no longer pregnant. I didn’t need all these professionals to tell me this over and over again. It was a traumatising experience being constantly reminded. I feel a registrar to question a consultant's diagnosis is inappropriate and should never have happened.
