"Giving Birth"

About: Maternity Care Services / Labour Ward Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Lothian Birth Centre

(as the patient),

I was 41+1 weeks pregnant. I had my usual midwife appointment where I asked for an induction. My midwife called the hospital to book me in. I was told to keep my phone on loud to await the call. 10pm someone from the hospital called me but I missed the call. I realised at 12am so I called them back. The lady in triage was so kind and reassured me that I had not missed my spot in the line.

10mins after the phone call my waters broke on their own at home. The contractions started to come faster and stronger so I called triage back as this was my third child. They told me to head into hospital to get checked. I arrived at 1.30am where I was greeted by a lovely midwife called Vicky and a student called Malin. They took me to the birthing suite room and assessed me. I laboured in that room until 2.30am where I was moved upstairs to the labour ward as I wanted an epidural. My midwife Vicky was amazing, constantly reassuring me and staying so calm. 2.45am and I started to feel the urge to push. There was no time for an epidural! Vicky guided me through each contraction telling me when to push and when to stop- to avoid tearing. My son was born at 3.10am which was my quickest delivery. He is perfection!!

I was able to rest for a while and then have my first shower. After some time I was moved down to the birthing suit room where I spent a few hours resting with my son. Around 8am the day shift midwives came to check on me. They couldn’t have been any more helpful and amazing. They asked me if I wanted to stay another night as there was no rush to leave. I said yes as my son was full of mucous from his fast delivery and I wanted some reassurance on feeding. The support from all the staff in the birthing suit at the Royal was incredible.

I have now had three children at that hospital from 2021-2025 and each time I’ve received great care and attention. Thank you again!
