"Thanks to everyone for looking after me so well"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Hairmyres / Intensive Care Unit University Hospital Hairmyres / Radiology University Hospital Hairmyres / Respiratory Medicine (Ward 12)

(as the patient),

I did not feel well and had shortness of breath with any exertion. My daughter visiting rang NHS24. While they were thinking I had another breathing problem. She rang again and was told to call for an ambulance. Almost immediately we were called by NHS24 doctor who said to get to A&E Hairmyres as quick as possible - my daughter drove me to avoid waiting for ambulance.

I had not realised how ill I was with pulmonary thrombosis caused by DVT. I have nothing but praise for how I was handled. On arrival the system was ready - first ECG and bloods then to Resus. Then a CT scan showed the problem. At some stage I had a breathing problem and my daughter thought I had died. Later in intensive care I was visited by the Resus nurse who confirmed they were very concerned with my blood pressure and heart failure, and that there was a crash team on call.

After treatment with blood conditioning injection I stabilised and was transferred to an intensive care ward. Again the level of care there was superb, I cannot thank them enough.

3 days later I went through the procedure to remove the clots from my lungs. Without anaesthetic it was very interesting to listen to the 3 hour procedure. Again I am full of praise for the technical competence of the team.

Following this I felt fine. I moved to another ward where again care was excellent. Following 24 hours without oxygen I was discharged.

I would also like to add to my praise the catering. Hospitals are not famed for their catering but to me the catering was faultless (except perhaps the coffee!) It seemed like great home cooking.

Thanks to everyone for looking after me so well.
