My father was admitted to ward 5, Hairmyres hospital at the end of September 2025. I want to share how attentive, kind and caring the staff of ward 5 were towards, not only my father, but to me, my sister and my niece who visited him most often.
My father was admitted with the idea that he would be discharged home, however it soon became clear that this would not be possible following a very rapid deterioration in his health. He eventually became bed bound and had multiple medical issues requiring attention from both medical and nursing staff.
When it became obvious that my father’s condition had become palliative, he was moved to a single room behind the nursing station. The family visiting were informed they could visit at any time. He was attended to by the palliative care team, medical and nursing staff, and all generic staff on the ward with a high level of empathy, compassion and care. This was mirrored in the care towards relatives.
My sister and I have had various experiences, with the staff in Hairmyres hospital over the years, with both my mother and father. Never have we experienced the level of care provided by the staff on Ward 5.
I could name the staff that I remember, but I do not wish to offend any staff member that I may not recall. With this in mind I will refrain from adding names. After all, it takes a team of staff to work together for the best interests of any patient, and this team were excellent.
The family were contacted on an evening in mid October, as there was a change in my dad’s condition. He died in the early hours of the next day with all the dignity one could expect in this situation.
We were treated with care, privacy and dignity, along with my dad.
I would be delighted for this message to be passed to Ward 5 for all to read.
On behalf of myself, my family, and most of all, my father I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for restoring my faith in human kindness, care, empathy and compassion.
With the kindest of thoughts towards you all
"High level of empathy, compassion and care"
