"I found the whole experience underwhelming"

About: St Andrews Community Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit

(as the patient),

I was advised to attend by my practice for a minor injury they couldn't deal with, possibly needing stitches. I felt the receptionist was somewhat dismissive, they then found someone who I assume is a practice nurse who said they would look but would not be under any circumstances doing any stitches.

I found the whole experience underwhelming, unprofessional and embarrassing. I chose, after waiting some time, to discharge myself without being seen or receiving any treatment since I'd been forewarned that any treatment I would get would obviously be substandard.

I have no wish to return to the community hospital and will have my medical notes updated with this.

Dear Glamorgan82,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

Minor Injuries at St Andrews Community Hospital is open Monday to Friday, 8am–6pm. Outside these hours, the Out of Hours Service operates from this department. This is an appointment-based service for urgent illness only, and is accessible by calling NHS 24 on 111. Please note that staff working during the out of hours period are not usually trained in minor injury care.

I’m very sorry to hear that your recent visit to the Minor Injuries service left you feeling dismissed and unsupported. This is not the standard of care we aim to provide, and I appreciate you bringing it to our attention.

I would like to investigate this further to understand what happened and ensure appropriate steps are taken. If you're willing, please contact me directly so we can discuss your experience in more detail. Your feedback is important, and I want to make sure it is fully heard and addressed.

You can reach me at fran.simpson@nhs.scot.

Kind Regards

Fran
