"Their attitude were shocking"

About: Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 1 (Emergency Medical) Victoria Hospital / Respiratory Medicine

(as a service user),

I have thought long and hard about writing this, but I think its important for the staff to understand how a patient feels when being admitted to their hospital.

I was recently admitted to AU1 with my COPD  I understand that this is a busy department but I think that the staff need to be to be aware that patients dont want to be in hospital, they are there because they are desperate for help.

The first person I met was a staff member who was clearly unhappy to see me. The look on this person's face when first saw me made this obvious. Their busy day was not my fault, I wasn't having a good day either.

Later I asked another staff member for painkillers and their attitude were shocking. The way in which they questioned me was so aggressive. I am not a junkie I was in a lot of pain due to my conditions.

I was later transferred to another ward and thankfully the staff were friendly and made me feel safe.

Getting help from my local hospital should not be like this but my experience in this department when admitted with my COPD have never been good.  Not all the staff are unfriendly and I have never complained before but this time I felt I had to speak up.

Dear bargainsn 93,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m very sorry to hear that your time in AU1 left you feeling this way, this is not the standard of care we aim to provide.

I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly to understand more. Please contact me on extension 21808.

Lisa Stokoe

Senior Charge Nurse
