"Good care form all"

About: New Stobhill Hospital / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

I just feel I have to record how well organised and how caring the staff in the Stobhill Day surgery department were when I had to go in there for some minor surgery a few weeks ago.

Before my surgery the consultant phoned me and told me all about what would happen before and during the surgery, I was having a nerve block and was a bit apprehensive about this, but the surgeon put my mind at rest.

The day I arrived for my surgery I was waiting in the waiting area for the department to open and the housekeeper, I think he is called Michael, he was doing his cleaning and what a good job he was doing, he even moved all the free standing posters to ensure that he had cleaned everywhere.

His area of the hospital foyer was very clean.

When the department opened, the receptionist was very helpful and I did not wait long to be attended to. The nurses who admitted me were very calm and put me very much at ease and they explained what was going to happen to me after they had carried out my admission procedure.

The anaesthetist came along and explained how the surgery would be carried out and put me at ease about the nerve block.

When waiting for my time to come to go to theatre the nursing staff continued to come and ask me if I needed anything and reassured me. The atmosphere in the department was very calm and when sitting waiting I could not help but overhear how the staff were treating other patients who were going for surgery, and they were all very kind and considerate to everyone.

When my time came to go to the theatre, I was taken to the anaesthetic room for my nerve block, and the nurse there explained what was going to happen and the anaesthetist also explained again the procedure. During the procedure the anaesthetist was as gentle as possible ensuring that I did not have any pain and that me arm was completely numb before transferring me to the theatre. The whole time during the nerve block the staff nurse kept talking to me to reassure me and assist me if it was necessary.

When I went into the theatre, all the staff were very kind to me and even gave me the choice of what music I wished to listen to. All during the procedure there was a nurse beside me talking to me to distract me from what was going on around me. When the surgery was finished and I was taken back to the day surgery unit, the staff again were very attentive to my needs, even to the point of helping me dress as my arm was in a sling.

I know this is all in the daily work of the nurse in day surgery, but the whole team were very kind and attentive to me and the other patients.

The team are a very well led team, and it is a very organised day surgery unit and I would give them 10 out of 10 for cleanliness as there was not a bit of dust to be seen. To be honest the whole of the Stobhill hospital is very clean so hats off to the cleaners there.

The anaethetist came to see that I was ok after the nerve block and she again phoned me at home 2 days later to ensure that I had the feeling back in my arm. This procedure I was apprehensive about, but I would recommend to everyone.

Please pass on my thanks to the whole team in the Stobhill Day surgery unit for the great job they carry out every day, and also Michael the housekeeper who cleans the foyer just outside of this unit.
