"Emergency dental treatment"

About: NHS 24 / Scottish Emergency Dental Service NHS Grampian / GDENS (Grampian Emergency Dental Service)

(as the patient),

We were on holiday in Scotland, one of our many visits. Unfortunately My toothache started on our journey up.  After 3 days the pain was too much and I had to call 111. The help I received was outstanding from the 111 help to the dental help. I can truly and honestly say that I know if I were at home back down in England, I would never have received the level of care I did in Scotland.

I was given an emergency appointment at the Argyll Dentistry Unit at the Aberdeen Infirmary for Saturday - yes Saturday! - morning.

I was seen by the nicest dental nurse I have ever met and then an equally wonderful lady dentist.

I apologised profusely for coming up from England and taking their time. They were so lovely to me and put me at complete ease.

I was examined and had an x-ray which should an infection all around my back, top-right Wisdom tooth. I assumed I would be given some anti-biotic and told to see my own dentist when we went back home.

But no, the incredible dentist said I think we need to remove that tooth now which I was not expecting. I was worried that would mean going to hospital because I had never heard of a Wisdom tooth being extracted like a ‘normal’ tooth and the dentist explained she could do it there and then. Obviously I was a bit worried about the procedure but I can 100% honestly say the numbing injections were not painful at all and the dentist was clearly an expert at her profession! She removed the tooth with no discomfort to myself at all!

I learnt that the wonderful stuff at the Dentistry hospital, volunteer to work on Saturdays which I was utterly shocked to hear. How wonderful and incredibly life affirming to learn that there are still such dedicated and professional, caring NHS staff. I do not know if this is the case in England but I do have my doubts that it is.

I cannot express my deepest and heartfelt thanks for all of the excellent care I received during this time and send my blessings to those wonderful ladies.

Hello PinkyFlower

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us.

While I’m sorry to hear that your holiday in Scotland was interrupted by dental pain, I’m truly glad that our Emergency Dental Care Team at Gdens was able to support you and make a difference during a time you needed us to elevate your pain – That’s what we are there for.

Your kind words about the care you received at are much appreciated. I will ensure your feedback is passed on to the dental nurse and dentist who treated you, as well as the wider team. It means a great deal to them to know their efforts are valued and especially your recognition they volunteer their time to provide care over the weekend.

We’re proud of the compassion and professionalism our staff show, and it's lovely to hear how much that meant to you.

I hope your treatment allowed you to enjoy the rest of your time in Scotland.

Many Thanks
