I was asked to come in for a repeat gastroscopy due to superficial ulcer which was treated with Omeprazol. I was asked by welcoming nurse if I wanted throat spray anaesthetic and having established that it would be quicker than last one and I could withdraw consent any time by raising my hand, I agreed.
After pre procedure sheets were complete they asked if I minded a trainee being in the room. I said that was fine. When I went into room I was introduced to a doctor who would be doing procedure (the previous CNS was also there).
The procedure was extremely uncomfortable, much worse than last time and I couldn't tolerate it for long. I asked for it to be taken out and this was only started after a while later and repeated requests and obvious discomfort.
The CNS told me that the ulcer had healed for which I am grateful. I discovered that the trainee had been the doctor performing the endoscopy and I feel that this should have been made clearer and also that I also now wonder if the endoscopy went on longer than necessary to allow trainee to go further into digestive tract, i.e. small intestine?
I also have an uncomfortable dull feeling like the tube is still there around my OG junction which I didn't have last time. I don't wish this to be seen as a complaint, more to ensure that communication is clearer. I have always had positive experiences of care in NHS and at Victoria hospital in particular and completely understand that training has to take place.
