"The operation and care I had was second to none"

About: Bideford Hospital / Pre Operative Assessment North Devon District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis of both hips in August 2024. After seeing my GP I followed a pathway which included X-Ray, physiotherapy, interface and referral in February 2025.

At referral I made the decision to see an orthopaedic consultant at NDDH. rather than other hospitals on offer. After that consultation in April 2024 I was placed on the waiting list for a total hip replacement of the right hip.

The consultant advised me that I would be placed on the waiting list for the second hip after the first hip surgery. At that time the expected waiting time was 49 weeks.

I had a pre-med at Bideford Hospital in September 2025 and signed the consent form shortly afterwards. In September I was invited to have a total hip replacement at NDDH.

The operation and care I had from all the staff on Jubilee ward was second to none and a credit to the hospital. This would include nursing staff, physios, patient service assistant and last but not least a brilliant surgeon, anaesthetist and theatre staff.

I am now at home recuperating and getting stronger by the day.
