"Weight loss assistance"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Weight Management General Practices in Grampian

(as a service user),

Asked to be referred to weight loss services, potentially for surgery.  Informed that I don't qualify as I'm not Type 2 diabetic or between ages 18-44.

I'm actually in my 50s, Type 1 diabetic with high blood pressure and a BMI of 40.  Weight has been a struggle for years despite numerous efforts to lose.  Have had counselling, been to slimming clubs, dietetic input, you name it.  Can't have weight loss injections. Feel ashamed and embarrased.  Asked for help as feeling desperate after trying so many things but now forced into looking for private options.  Feeling so disappointed and frustrated.  I wonder how much I will cost the NHS in the future with all the weight related issues coming my way

Hi Robinxx21,

I’m sorry to hear about the struggles you have had getting advice and treatment to help you move forward with weight loss and feel more comfortable with yourself. Asking for help in itself can be hard enough without feeling like there are barriers between you and the services that may be able to help you.

I’m not linked to any of the services you are looking for advice from, I work in the Quality Improvement Team at NHS Grampian and have the job of making sure the feedback shared on Care Opinion reaches the teams it was intended for. Unfortunately, the GP Practices don’t have responding access on Care Opinion, in fact most of the GP Practices in Grampian are independently run and have their own complaints and feedback processes. They won’t see this post with it being shared with them directly. I’m also responding because it sounds like you are stuck in limbo between the service you’d like to be referred to and the GP and I’d like to try to get you some advice on what to do next.

Would you mind getting in touch with me directly? I know this would mean breaking your anonymity, which you might not feel comfortable doing, so it’s completely up to you. I can be contacted on email: kirsten.dickson@nhs.scot or telephone / text: 07885720267.

In the meantime I will look for contacts in the service to share your experience with.

Take care,

Kirsten
