"Cancer treatment and facilities available to NHS Fife patients"

About: NHS Fife

(as a relative),

I am writing regarding my mother in-laws' experience of having cancer treatment for the last 2 and half years within NHS Fife. She and my father in-law both reside in Kirkcaldy and for the past 2 and a half years have been travelling to Western General Hospital in Edinburgh to have treatment for the type of cancer she has been diagnosed with.

Thankfully my father in-law who is in his late 70s can still drive, however going back and forth to Western General Hospital has taken a huge toll on him and on his health recently. Driving through busy roads in Edinburgh makes him very anxious now, but also the added pressures of being the carer for my mother in-law just adds to everything else. Appreciate that there is a transport service for Fife patients to be transported to and fro to Edinburgh however the one time my mother in-law had used this service it was very distressing for her as on her trip heading back home after having her cancer treatment she was feeling extremely exhausted and nauseous at times; her trip was 2-3 hours long from the point of waiting for the transport in Edinburgh and by the time the transport did its drop offs.

Getting to understand the impact that travelling to and fro to Edinburgh to have cancer treatment which NHS Fife cannot full fill due to resources, expertise, funding etc is having, not just on my in-laws, but also on the wider service users from Fife, it is very clear to see that there is a real lack of providing an extensive full and a wide range of package of care for certain cancer patients. Why are rural areas such as Fife being deprived of getting care at the right time and at the right place i.e. care closer to home? How is this supporting the older generation? And what hope is there for generations to come if this seen as the 'norm' to travel 30-40 miles to have medical treatment?

I feel there needs to be a review of how ALL cancer is treated within Fife, and that care needs to be provided within the Fife borders.
