I wanted to take a moment to share a few words about the incredible support I received from the Discharge Support Volunteer Team who support discharged patients from the orthopaedic wards at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.
At the time of my discharge, I didn’t fully appreciate the value of their role. It wasn’t until I returned home—after four weeks in hospital—that my new reality set in. For the first time in weeks, I had to manage everything on my own and I’m not ashamed to admit that I struggled—mentally, physically and emotionally.
Within days of being home, I encountered a very difficult and upsetting situation with my care provider. In the midst of that turmoil, I received my first call from the Discharge Support Volunteer Team. My two words to describe this service are “Soul Savers.”
The lady on the other end of the phone, Donna, and her colleague Lewis, gave me the time and space I needed to decompress, regain perspective and figure out how to address the problems I was facing. Donna and Lewis, gave me the confidence to stand up for myself and ensure I received the care and support necessary for my recovery. With their help, I was able to adjust to being at home with carers and learn how to use the new aids that supported my rehabilitation.
The support from the Discharge Support Volunteer Team is immeasurable. Recovering from orthopaedic surgeries is one of the most challenging and frustrating processes because we’re not ill in the conventional sense. We’re coping with broken or damaged bones and constant pain that demand time, patience and resilience. It can be exhausting and nerve-racking as you rebuild strength, stamina, and confidence.
I wholeheartedly encourage every patient to engage with this service upon discharge. For me, they truly saved my soul, providing the emotional support and stability I needed during my transition from hospital to home.
