"Not properly supported to eat and drink"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Medicine for the Elderly

(as a service user),

My father had enjoyed good health up until his late 70s.  Unfortunately he became seriously unwell due to sepsis and ended up in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

During his stay in the hospital we were impressed with some individual nurses and doctors but overall disappointed that not enough attention was paid to my father having difficulty eating.  Despite me writing on meal forms that he was having problems digesting normal food we were not offered the puree menu until circa day 20 of his hospital stay.  When he was offered the meal from the puree menu he was able to eat it and we did manage to get him home for his last month of life because as a family we put in so much support ourselves.

I was shocked that patients in acute medical wards at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary are not properly supported to eat and drink to improve their health.  Not sure if it is a lack of training/interest/staffing but it is distressing to witness.  Saw it impact other patients on the ward too since I was on the wards for such long periods to support my father.

Hi, HopeforImprovement

I an saddened to hear your families experience within the acute medical wards RIE. This is not what we strive for within the hospital and I would like to apologise for this experience during your fathers admission.

I would be grateful if I could look into this further in order to make improvements to our services. NHS Lothian has a robust feedback procedure through our Patient experience team who can be contacted by the details below.
