"Experience in A&E"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

Spent time recently in A+E department after my daughter had an accident at school and hurt her ankle/foot.

Triaged by a lovely nurse and then had a fair wait before we were greeted by a lovely medical student who treated my daughter with the utmost kindness and respect. They did a thorough examination and chatted through everything that had happened and all the issues we have faced, unfortunately this is where it went wrong,

Greeted by a doctor who seemed very busy and made my daughter feel like an inconvenience. They were rude, brash and I didn't feel like they listened to anything me or my daughter said. They snapped when my daughter stated she was in pain all over and not in one specific area. The Doctor did order an x-ray which was done and then called back into an area within the reception area (which was heaving) to be told there was nothing wrong. I really felt like I was spoken to like an idiot.

They told me to put supportive footwear on my daughter and to teach her to walk properly. Honestly as a nurse of nearly 16 years I've never dealt with a doctor with as bad a bedside manner, I found them so abrupt or quite frankly down right rude.

Dear Kitkat1875,

I am sorry to hear that your daughter needed to attend our Emergency Department following an injury to her ankle and foot.

I am the Clinical Nurse Manager for our Emergency Department. I am sorry to hear that your experience with our doctor was not not a positive one. I'd like the opportunity to address this with the individual. In order to do this can I ask that you send your daughters name and date of birth to LOTH.Feedback@nhs.scot to allow me to review her records and identify this member of staff?

I am pleased that your interactions with our nursing staff and medical student were more positive.

Feedback is really important to us, so thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience.
