"I felt supported and empowered"

About: Perth Royal Infirmary / Community Midwifery Unit

(as the patient),

My maternity journey started off on a really difficult note. After negative experiences before, I was ready to reject all midwife care completely. But by pure chance, I met Marie when I went in to have a concern checked — and that meeting changed everything. I immediately asked for her to become my midwife, as she completely restored my faith in people and in midwifery care.

Marie supported me through my planned birth outwith guidance — a VBA2C (vaginal birth after two caesareans). From the very beginning, she respected my choices while still doing her job with integrity and ensuring I was always fully informed. She cared deeply, listened without judgment, and took the time to truly get to know me. We built a wonderful rapport and bond, and I felt safe enough to share personal parts of my life that helped her provide a care plan that felt genuinely tailored to me.

Because of my home birth plans, Marie even arranged a meeting with the midwife consultant, Lisa, who was also absolutely amazing. Marie continually went above and beyond to make sure I felt supported and empowered. I truly believe that her professionalism, encouragement, and compassion were key reasons why I was able to have a successful VBA2C — and at 42 weeks, my baby was born naturally.

I am so proud of myself, and Marie was just as proud of me. I’m endlessly grateful for her care and support — she has completely changed my perception of NHS midwives. After traumatic experiences with my previous two births and at the start of this pregnancy, Marie gave me hope, trust, and healing.

If I were ever to have another baby, I would want Marie by my side again. Every woman deserves to experience this level of care. Thank you, Marie — from the bottom of my heart.

Dear AL Rae,

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide such lovely feedback. Congratulations on the birth of our baby. I am so glad to read that the care you received made you feel heard, supported and empowered. It is the type of care that we strive to deliver to ensure women feel part of their birth journey and fully informed ensuring a positive birth outcome for all. I will ensure it is shared with the teams and the staff you have named.

Best wishes and kind regards, Claire Massey (Lead Midwife)
