"He passed away surrounded by loving family"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Dementia North Devon District Hospital / Medical Assessment Unit (Alexandra Ward) North Devon District Hospital / Theatres North Devon District Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

I am posting on behalf of our family following the death of my Father-in-Law. He was admitted to MAU at NDDH on October with a suspected chest infection. After a difficult few days, he deteriorated very rapidly, and we were soon delivered the sad news that he was end of life. He was immediately transferred to a side room so that he and the family could have a quiet space and some dignity.

We are all so thankful for the care he received from start to end. From the doctors and their honesty, the nurses and HCAs for their compassion and professionalism and all the various support staff (the china teacups were such a lovely touch). The tea and toast arriving throughout the night from all grades of staff kept us going. He passed away surrounded by loving family. And we will never forget the opportunity given to us for those moments with him.

We observed the challenges the staff faced day to day, and the constant professional care given to all patients. There were several times the staff themselves seemed to need a little hug.

As well as his final time on the ward, my father-in-law was able to receive gold standard care from various other departments such as the Urology Team, Theatres, The Admiral Nurses, the Memory clinic and Dementia services.

We could never thank everyone enough, and all the staff will forever hold a place in our hearts.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your positive experience on Alex ward in what must be a difficult time for you and your family. I am glad that we were able to provide your father and your family with the space and time to spend quality time together at the end.
