"Procedures carried out in corridor"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Initial Assessment Unit

(as a service user),

I was transferred from one department to another; in the short stay department there was no bed available for me despite being moved from the IAU ward where there were many beds free.

I was in a lot of pain and really not feeling good. I was sat in the middle of the ward near the nurses station, and whilst waiting there I had to have a cannula sited which took a couple of attempts and caused me a bit of distress especially being in the middle of a ward and this being the very first time I have ever been in a hospital too. There was many many people passing by as I was sat with an ANP then a doctor trying to get the line, from visitors to domestics cleaning around me. I also then had to move over to another part of the ward as the lunch trolley came and had to go where I had been sat. Whilst this was ongoing nursing staff were wandering around the ward, seen what was happening to me getting a cannula sited in the middle of the ward and did not bat an eyelid.

I must say the nursing staff in the ward who were looking after me were amazing, they couldn’t apologise enough for what was happening to me and even appeared embarrassed that it was happening.

A close family member of mine works for the NHS. I find it absolutely laughable that she is not allowed to have a small pair of earrings in or a watch on and would get into trouble for this but it is acceptable for me to be sat in the middle of a ward for 3 hours with no comfortable place for me to sit and even have a cannula placed whilst a domestic is cleaning around me. What in the world is our NHS coming to.
