"My sons mental health"

About: Children's Specialist Health Services / Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)

(as a parent/guardian),

My adult son was diagnosed just over 2 years ago with psychosis. Getting him help at the time was one of the hardest things I have ever encountered. I was repeatedly told by GP receptionists that he was an adult and needed to seek help by himself, and other services said they couldn’t do anything unless he was referred by a GP, the problem with this was he thought he was alright and that everyone else had it in for him, so refused to go to GP.

He wouldn’t come out of his bedroom or take care of himself and was suicidal. To cut a long story short, he eventually got help and was referred to CAMHS in Motherwell. The nurses that came to see him were great, and slowly got him back to some sort of new normality. His psychiatrist wasn’t very helpful and within the first few months went off sick, however, the locum that took their place was really good and seen him without fail approximately every 3 months. As of January this year (2025), the original psychiatrist is back and we haven’t heard a thing.

Last year the nurse that was visiting him went off sick, and the nurse that came to visit my son in their place, signed him off after a 10 minute visit, I don't believe they wouldn’t have known much about him, or how he will tell them what they want to hear. Whereas his original nurse seemed to have a handle on him. His original nurses also got him to attend a group session on a Wednesday, which was disbanded too.

I felt after this he was left without anything. I’m not sure, but maybe this is the way things naturally progress in mental health services. However, my son has never fully recovered from psychosis and it has become a new norm for us, but we have reached out to CAMHS on a few occasions asking when he will get another appointment with his psychiatrist as we have noticed he seems to be sliding back a bit. I think his medication definitely needs reviewed. The staff that answer the phone take his details and tell us someone will be in touch, but no one gets back. The last time I reached out recently, where my son spoke on the phone giving permission for me to speak on his behalf. We don’t want to put pressure on a service that is already pushed to the limits, but I really don’t want to see my son end up as bad as he was in the beginning either.

Good afternoon,

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback about your and your son's experience with our service. I’m truly sorry to hear that you feel we’re currently unable to offer a review for your son, and I understand how difficult and frustrating that must be.

We are actively working to address a number of psychiatry vacancies across the service. Recruitment and exploring alternative solutions are ongoing, but unfortunately these processes do take time.

If you would like to discuss your concerns in more detail, I’d be happy to speak with you. Please feel free to give me a call on 01698 755360.

Kind regards,
Lisa Marie
