"use of A&E at Ayr hospital"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

Recently at 4pm my wife went to Ayr A&E department, sent by her Doctor, with a note for surgical team to investigate long on-going lower abdomen pain, and difficulty in passing stools.

She waited 8 hours in reception of A&E, before being put on a trolley. At 8am the following morning she had still not been seen by a doctor, though as was in considerable pain, was given morphine during the night.

As I personally had a broadly very similar experience two years ago, I  felt I had to say something about the appalling state of our National Health Service.  My wife and I feel deeply let down.

Dear Bobby P

I am sorry to hear your wife has been unwell lately, and that she faced significant delays to being seen by a Doctor when she attended the department.

This is far from ideal, and is not the service we strive to provide. Our department has been under severe pressure both in terms of the volume of patients presenting, and in bed capacity available across the site. This unfortunately causes delays which we do our best to minimise as much as we are able.

On this occasion I am sorry if this was not possible.

Should you wish to discuss further with me then with your wife's consent, please contact me on email robert.campbell@aapct.scot.nhs.uk with the details of your wife's visit and I will look into this.

best regards

Robert Campbell
