"Outstanding Care"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / 23 Hour Unit ( Ward 1A)

(as a parent/guardian),

My son attended Ward 1A and 1B at RHC Glasgow in October 2025 to have his tonsils and adenoids removed, and I wanted to share our experience and heartfelt thanks to the whole team involved.

Just over a week before his admission, we received a call for his pre-assessment. During that call, I explained that my son had previous hospital trauma and was extremely anxious about hospital environments. The nurse who spoke with me was incredibly understanding, took the time to listen, and reassured me that our concerns would be passed on to the team caring for him.

She also referred us to the Play Therapist, who arranged a visit to the Teddy Bear Hospital the day before admission. We met Gail, who was absolutely wonderful. My son was able to explore and play with the equipment that would be used during his procedure and even visit the ward in advance. This experience made such a difference — it really helped ease his anxiety and allowed him to approach the day with far more confidence.

On the day of surgery, we met the nurses, doctors, anaesthetist, and surgeon, and it was immediately clear that everyone was aware of his background and previous experiences. The communication between staff was superb — we didn’t have to retell our story once. Every member of the team was kind, patient, and attentive to my son’s needs.

Both my husband and I were amazed to see how relaxed and cooperative our son was — allowing blood pressures, temperatures, and other checks to be done without distress. This was something we honestly didn’t think we would see, and it’s entirely down to the team’s exceptional care and understanding.

His surgery went smoothly, and we were able to return home the same day. We are so grateful for the compassion, professionalism, and teamwork shown throughout our experience.

The staff of Ward 1A and 1B are a true credit to the hospital — thank you all so much for the outstanding care you provided to our son and to us as parents.
