While visiting a caravan park, my daughter had a freak accident while riding on the back of her Granda’s bike. She sustained a nasty third degree friction burn and horrible bruising on her right foot when it got caught in the back wheel of the bike.
As soon as the accident happened we rushed to Stirling Minor Injuries where she had an x-ray which thankfully showed no broken bones. The nurses contacted the burns clinic at Glasgow Children’s Hospital and we got an appointment for the next day. The nurse in Stirling was amazing, she was very calm and reassuring. She spent time making sure my daughter had enough pain relief and ensuring we were all okay. She received the most amazing service when we arrived at Glasgow the following day. Everyone was waiting for her at her appointment time, at least 3 nurses, play specialist, physio and consultant. They made sure to reassure us and my daughter and took so much care when looking after her.She was unable to walk or put any weight on her foot for a few weeks and the physio managed to secure us a wheelchair and walking frame for her to get about. She had to take some time off school so this made a massive difference for us, and also supported her in her return to school. We had a few weeks of waiting to see if a skin graft was required, within this time we had the community nurses coming around twice a week to change my daughter’s dressings and we had appointments at Glasgow every week or two for the consultant to check her foot. The community nurses Ellen and Gemma could not have been nicer! They were so friendly and helpful and spent lots of time making sure she was comfortable and happy. They really made a massive difference to my daughter’s recovery, she looked forward to them coming to the house to change her dressings - I’m sure the stickers were just a bonus! Throughout all this time the service from all the staff was amazing, everyone in Glasgow and the community team have been great! Super friendly and nothing ever seemed too much for them. We arrived at Glasgow for one of my daughter’s appointments which had been accidentally cancelled without our knowledge - this wasn’t a problem at all and they made sure to see us and change her dressings without any fuss. They definitely went above and beyond for her and we really appreciated it. We are now 10 weeks down the line and finally discharged from the community nurses thankfully without needing a skin graft - even though we have been discharged, they have made it clear that they are only a phone call away if we need any help or advise as there is still a risk to her scars opening or being raised. We cannot thank all the nurses and staff enough for all their help with my daughter and her recovery - they have definitely made the last few weeks that little bit easier.
"The service from all the staff was amazing"
