I gave birth to our gorgeous baby girl in August this year. Our Labour and Birth was not plain sailing however the midwife that cared for me throughout was the most incredible woman and without her I’m not sure how I would have coped. Our Midwife was called Leanne and she looked after us in DMU before moving with us to labour suit and then onto theatre.
Leanne was always very calm and reassuring, attributes that are so important to woman going through childbirth. Leanne was there for us every step of the way and not only did she support me she also made my husband feel at ease throughout, making sure he was aware of what was happening at all times.
At times we also had support from the senior midwife in charge on that shift Sarah who was an angel in a dark blue uniform. She had such an amazing temperament and was always able to explain what was about to happen next in the best way at each stage of my labour. When things weren’t going in our favour Sarah had a way of calming me down and ensuring I understood what the next part of my labour would look like.
Leanne ensured when we knew we were going to theatre that we were not waiting any longer than needed she had us prepared and prepped for theatre in advance and made the experience a lot less stressful than I imagined it could have been had we not had Leanne by our side.
Our little girl was due to be born at around hand over time, however Leanne went that extra mile for us and reassured me that she had been there throughout my labour and was not about to leave us at the last hurdle, so Leanne got herself into scrubs knowing she would potentially go slightly over her shift. This continuity of care and genuine interest from Leanne made us feel so well cared for, especially in what turned out to be quite a tramatic birth which resulted in my daughter spending two days in NICU.
I was then handed over after delivery to a new midwife Hannah who was also incredible during my recovery. Both Midwives I felt genuinely cared about me and my baby.
The following day when Leanne was on shift she made a point during her break to come to NICU to see how both myself and our baby were doing which again I just felt these small gestures that go above and beyond Leanne’s job description meant the world to us just to know she cared.
We don’t have enough words to thank Leanne enough and I hope this review reaches her as she is one in a million and she is a credit to the midwifery team in Ninewells along side Hannah and senior Midwife Sarah.
Staff often don’t get the recognition for the work they do and these three woman saw this day as just another day at the office, but to us their care meant the world and made our experience incredible even when we faced some challenges along the way.
If only we had a way of repaying these woman, but I feel this review will hopefully go some way to showing our appreciation.
Keep being amazing and any woman who have you ladies support during Labour and birth are very very lucky and are in amazing hands.
