"Denied Sterilisation"

About: Perth Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I went to my GP to ask to be referred for sterilisation, as I have never wanted kids nor will I ever want to be pregnant. I have multiple different chronic health conditions as well as undiagnosed ADHD, and Autism, history of depression, and anxiety. Family history of breast and cervical cancer, as well as heart attacks and MS. I don't want to pass this on to any child.

I was referred, had a discussion about different birth control, none of which work for me as the idea of having something inserted in me I cannot remove makes me anxious and is just vile. I cannot stand injections either.

Got denied in the summer (but only found out this week), as apparently Tayside have a policy that they don't offer sterilisation to under 30s. No advice, just an un-spellchecked recommendation from a doctor that said just maybe should try the 'cooper' coil.

The under 30s policy has to be incorrect, as a relative's partner succeeded in being referred for a vasectomy in their early 20s; but they denied my female relative who was 25 at the time, despite her having had two children and endometriosis. I feel there is a distinct gender discrimination here, regardless of if a vasectomy is "reversible" or not.

I believe women should be allowed the right to choose if they want to be sterilised or not. It should not be up to a board of doctors. I don't understand why hospitals don't have a waiver they get people to sign, saying they understand it is irreversible and in the event they regret it, they cannot sue the hospital.

I'm sick to the back teeth of being dismissed because of my age. My reasons are valid. If I could afford private I would go private.

What's better - denying women the ability to have their tubes tied or removed, and then forcing them to go through the mental trauma of an abortion after they're assaulted or their birth control fails?? Or letting women make their own choice, with the option to adopt or do IVF in the future if their minds are changed.
