"Great care from midwives"

About: Maternity Care / Infant Feeding Team Maternity Care / Labour Ward Maternity Care / Postnatal (Ward 22)

(as a service user),

I was admitted to labour ward after having a balloon induction the previous day.

Despite knowing how busy the unit was we received excellent care from everyone involved. Especially midwife  Shona and student midwife Taylor and midwife Ashley and student Nicole. They really took the time to read through our birth plan/ preferences and discussed everything at length with us.

Things didn’t go according to my ideal plan of having minimal interventions due to needing to be induced but every step of the way it was explained to us why each intervention was required. Every effort was made to help us achieve as much of our preferences as possible. We ended up needing to go to theatre for an assisted delivery with forceps. This was quite daunting and I was worried about needing a section if this didn’t work. Moira looked after me and kept me calm on the way to theatre and while I was getting the spinal. I was in a lot of pain at this point due to the baby’s position and as my epidural had worn off but she kept me calm and reassured me. She then kept me informed of everything the doctors were doing and coached me through pushing with each contraction.

The care we received in the post natal ward was also excellent. We had a lot of input from all staff to help us with breastfeeding which helped us to get off to a great start. We also had input from physio, feeding team and neonatal which made us feel really well looked after.

Thank you to everyone to help us welcome our baby boy safely.

Dear listenzf33,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience within the maternity wards; from the induction process, labour and with the Postnatal Ward.

I'm sorry to hear things did not go completely to plan however extremely reassured by the care and consideration given by staff to your birth plan, taking time to explain every aspect of care. I appreciate how daunting and vulnerable it can feel when being transferred to theatre however it is lovely to hear the experience, professionalism and kindness shown by all the staff kept you feeling calm and informed of everything that was happening.

It is extremely reassuring that the high standard of care continued within the Postnatal Ward and you received support and input from a wide range of staff which contributed to your overall excellent experience.

We will ensure the positive feedback is shared amongst our Maternity Team and hope you are enjoying time as a family with your new baby boy.
