About: Trauma & Orthopaedics / Trauma Admissions Unit (Ward 18) Trauma & Orthopaedics / Trauma/Orthopaedics (Ward 17)

(as a relative),

My Mum was admitted into hospital in August due to her scar bleeding & low blood pressure from her surgery in Glasgow.

In A&E my mum was told that she would get a cup of tea & toast in ward 17 as she hadn't had anything to eat. We arrived at ward 17, and the nurse started to taking down my mum's personal details and other stuff. I did try to inform the nurse of the injection the GP put her on and that she had at 7pm in A&E, which i spoke to someone about. The nurse came across angry with me for doing that. My mum asked if she could get the toilet, the nurse gave a walking aid and helped her to the toilet. As they were going towards the toilet the nurse started to move the aid too far forward away from my mum. My husband and myself were also asked to leave but I said not till I speak with the doctor. By then I wasn't comfortable in leaving her in there.

My Mum never received any tea and toast the night she was admitted and she also didn't get any breakfast in the morning. My Mum asked the nurse why she wasn't getting breakfast and they said that my mum was going for surgery. My Mum got very upset with this and the nurse asked why she was crying. It was because she'd already had the surgery in Glasgow. The nurses should already know that with the handover they do.

Later on that day my mum was told she would get something to eat for her lunch. So my mum hadn't had anything to eat since afternoon on the day before.

We popped out to visit her on the Sunday with things. We felt we weren't there long and got asked to leave so they could do blood pressure.

On the following morning my mum was told she was moving to ward 18. The nurse from ward 17 made my mum walk to ward 18 knowing she had low blood pressure. Ward 18 staff weren't too happy with the nurse and also approached them about it, but they just smiled. The nurse didn't seem to understand or listen to what they were being told.

We can't thank ward 18 enough for all their help and for making the rest of the time my mum was there comfortable and safe.

Good Morning,

Please accept my sincere apologies for the experience you and your mum had during your time in Ward 17. As the SCN this is not my expectation from the team. If you would like to contact me directly with further information this would allow me to carry out a thorough investigation.

You can also submit a formal complaint via tay.feedback@nhs.scot
