I had a ten day admission to ward 106 at Edinburgh royal infirmary for emergency gallbladder surgery and treatment for post op strep bacteremia infection. I arrived very unwell, disoriented and in pain. The staff could not have been been more kind or caring. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble despite the ward being very busy with other patients also needing care.
Every nurse was so gentle and pleasant and in particular one stood fanning me with a bowl at 3am to help cool me down when my temp spiked at 40.1. I wish I could remember everyone's name, but the ones I do recall Tracy, Jodie, Eugenia and Sharon really left an impact. It was clear during my stay that the nurses were under pressure. But I never heard one person complain in front of patients.
I cannot stress how much having kind efficient and experienced staff made my stay less stressful (even during the middle of the night obs and troublesome cannula changes!). I know I was just one of 36 people needing help each of those days I was there, but I never felt anything less than just as important. I am so grateful to everyone who looked after me with compassion, patience and good humour during a very vunerable time.
"Excellent care in hospital"
