"Poor A&E experience"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

In comparison to my other positive story about an A&E experience elsewhere, I was admitted to my local hospital, The Royal Oldham, earlier this year with pneumonia, kidney failure and suspected sepsis.

I had repeated blood tests on arrival, despite my CRP levels being at 200 from blood tests only a few hours ago at my GP's surgery and all them records being on their system. I spent 25 hours sat in A&E, on metal seating (i was being treated at the time), then another 14 hours on a trolley in a corridor, repeatedly being told I needed to be admitted as I was very poorly. I was finally discharged with oral medication as my body had reacted well to IV medication.

Dear Service User

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We're very sorry to hear about the challenges you faced during your visit to The Royal Oldham Hospital, and we appreciate your feedback.

Our A&E departments are extremely busy areas of care, often dealing with high volumes of patients with urgent and complex needs. While we strive to provide timely and compassionate care to everyone, we recognise that long waits and discomfort can be distressing—especially when someone is feeling very unwell.

We understand your concerns about repeated testing and the time spent waiting for admission. Please be assured that your feedback will be shared with the relevant teams to help us reflect and improve. However, as this comment is anonymous, it’s difficult for us to look into the specifics of your case or provide a direct response.

If you would like to take this further or receive a more detailed reply, we encourage you to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) by email: pals@nca.nhs.uk or phone: 0161 778 5665 between 09:30 hours and 16:30 hours Monday to Friday. They can support you in raising your concerns formally and ensure they are reviewed appropriately.

Thank you again for your feedback, and we wish you continued recovery and good health.
