"Amazing midwifery staff"

About: Maternity care / Ward 45 ( antenatal) Maternity care / Ward 46 (post-natal) Maternity care / Ward 48 (labour ward)

(as a service user),

I delivered my baby boy in August 2025 in Altnagelvin hospital and the care that I received was outstanding. Fair play to the midwifery staff they were stretched thin with an extremely busy ward and transfers of patients to other hospitals but despite all that they still went above and beyond ensuring I was well cared for and comfortable.

In particular I would like to note the student nurses in both the antenatal and postnatal wards - particular mention to the student from queens university (I think her name was either Orla or Ciara I’m not sure - she had long dark hair) who sat with me after my baby was born and helped me feed him and then settled him after so that I could rest. She is going to make a fantastic midwife.

I would also like to acknowledge Kathleen in the antenatal ward, Rihannon and Alice in the labour ward and Julie in postnatal (I hope I have the names right) who took such good care of me and my little man. There are so many negative comments about care in Altnagelvin but I can honestly say the staff are amazing and do not get the recognition they deserve.
