"Distressed and Disappointed"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My husband brought our two children to Daisy Hill Hospital Emergency Department recently — one had a sore throat and was feeling unwell, and the other had rashes all over her body.

At reception, he was told that only one child would be checked in first and that both would be seen once inside A&E. They were asked to wait in the main waiting area, but were never brought into a room.

Over the next four to five hours, our son’s condition worsened — his sore throat became more severe, and he started developing a high fever while lying down on the waiting room chairs. My husband tried several times to get staff attention, but was told they would focus on the baby first. No one came to assess or check on him.

When a doctor finally saw our daughter, she was sent home with hydrocortisone cream, but our son was never examined. By the time they got home, he had developed a very high fever and later became delirious and hallucinating, which led to another emergency visit around midnight.

We completely understand that A&E can be very busy, but it was extremely distressing that our son was left without any assessment or monitoring for hours, even as his condition visibly worsened.

I hope Daisy Hill Hospital can review this incident and ensure that all children are at least briefly assessed or checked while waiting, especially when more than one sick child is brought in.

We truly appreciate the hard work of NHS staff, but this experience left us feeling worried, unheard, and disappointed.

Thank you for taking the time to share the experience of care in Emergency Department at Daisy Hill Hospital recently for your children. I am sorry that this experience has left you feeling worried, unheard, and disappointed.

We are looking into the issue at reception about your children not being checked in individually, as this should have happened. Each child would be required to be checked in individually so that they each could be logged into the system and then individually triaged by the nurse so that their condition could each be assessed. I am sorry that this did not happen and your son had to re-attend the Emergency Department later that night.

I would appreciate if you could make contact with me ( 02830835000 ext. 62973) so that I can look into this matter in further detail.

Kind regards

Lisa Small

Update posted by Concern mom (a parent/guardian)

Thank you for your reply and for acknowledging what happened during our recent visit to Daisy Hill Hospital. I appreciate that you’re looking into the issue of both children not being properly checked in and triaged.

Before I call, could you please clarify what happens next if I do get in touch — will this just be logged as feedback, or will the situation be formally investigated? I want to be sure that the staff involved are held accountable, as what happened to our son was very serious and, frankly, felt like negligence.

Our main concern is that no other child should be left unassessed for several hours when their condition is clearly worsening. We would like reassurance that there are steps being taken to prevent this from happening again, and that this incident will be properly reviewed at the appropriate level.
