I have been with my dad a few times in the last year whilst he has needed to visit the Glasgow Royal infirmary and wanted to highlight a few things that I have noticed whilst there, in the hope that someone reads this and makes a change.
Whilst in a cubicle in the A&E department I watched a staff member sort out fluid bags in a cupboard. They emptied the contents of the cupboard onto the floor and then sorted the bags from there. These fluid bags will be used for patients who could be seriously ill and the transfer of bacteria from the floor to a staff members glove to the patient wasn't considered at all. Further, I don't know who would be the person to tell them that this is not acceptable. Many other staff walked past and didn't seem to notice anything wrong.
Recently my dad was in hospital and noticed another staff member changing a bed beside him and they put the clean bedding on the floor whilst they stripped the old bedding off the bed and then replaced with the bedding on the floor. Really!
One other thing I noticed whilst in accident and emergency. My dad and three other patients were all waiting on blood tests and heart traces. Would it not make more sense to just have them all done at the same time, with one staff member focussing on the basics test to get done and then they are ready for when another staff member is available. I feel that staff need to be managed and I don't see that happening anywhere. Many years ago, I did some voluntary work and there was a Matron in charge of several wards - she made sure that nurses were following the rules and providing the best care. I feel the NHS needs someone to direct the staff and I have never witnessed that anywhere I have been in the NHS.
Also I think that small wards and single wards (I understand that this is to prevent infection spread) are much more difficult to manage and in the case of children's wards I feel it could actually be putting them at risk.
This does appear as a rant and I apologise, it is actually only because I care and I am desperate to see the continuation of the NHS, I think doctors and nurses do a great job and work under extreme pressure. I just think there are many areas where we could improve and nurses and doctors are the people we should be speaking to, to gain ideas and inspiration.
