About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I had a horrible throbbing feeling in my head that was affecting my vision and my balance, it was completely shrugged off and blamed on my medication and just being a migraine.

I also mentioned that I was trans and my legal name on my records was not my name, despite this, I was still addressed as the wrong pronoun and by my legal name without one exception.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re very sorry to hear about the symptoms you experienced and that you felt your concerns were not fully acknowledged. We also apologise for the waiting time you encountered. We see patients according to clinical acuity and priority, which means that emergencies are seen first, this can unfortunately cause delays for others at times.

We’re also very sorry that you were addressed by the wrong name and pronouns. We fully understand how important it is to be recognised and respected as your true self. Unfortunately, there are occasions where we may not be able to update certain details, such as a legal name, immediately in our records. However, our staff should always use your correct name and pronouns when addressing you, and we apologise that this did not happen on this occasion.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. Your feedback will be shared with our team to help us improve the respect and inclusivity of the care we provide.
