"A lack of explanation and woefully inadequate after care"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Colorectal surgery & stoma care

(as the patient),

I had surgery for a peri anal abscess last month and was advised that if it was to reoccur I would need a seton procedure. At the start of this month I found myself back in the ESAC at Wonford having been sent to Abbey Ward for the second time, by my GP. I was seen but told to go home again as the clinician on that occasion thought I’d need a MRI to determine if a fistula had formed and because they were incredibly busy and I could be waiting a long time. I had a call from the ESAC at approx 20:00 hours that evening to say I’d be sent an appt for MRI, which I received via MyCare with an instruction to come to the ESAC afterwards.

I had my MRI a couple of days later and then sat in a cold and drafty waiting room for 4 hours waiting for someone to tell me what was going to happen. I was sent home again same day with antibiotics as the MRI results had not appeared. Despite several follow up calls, I eventually had a call several days later to say I did have a fistula and that the Doctor had referred me to a Colorectal specialist to confirm next steps. I received a letter via MyCare after a few more days, to say the fistula was small and may resolve itself without surgery and that I’d be offered an outpatient appointment.

Since this time, and every time I have to go to the toilet, I experience what appears to be fecal matter in a faint yellowish liquid leaking from my rectum, or possibly another abscess. I have called and left 4 messages now on the number on the letter I received, as I simply need to know if what I am experiencing is normal. On one day last week I was so concerned I rang 111, as having been to the toilet some 3 times, the discharge I experienced was excessive. This is affecting my mental health as I am unable to work and for personal hygiene reasons, am afraid to leave the house as I have to change the gauze I am still wearing, every 2 / 3 hours.
