"Visit to A&E"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

Although my care was satisfactory , I was appaled by the way the staff  where representing our once proud NHS.

The majority of staff appearances where a disgrace , uniforms did not look professional and untidy in general appearance .eg scruffy trainers and dirty looking uniforms not fitting properly .and the wearing of old jumpers and hoody jackets. I worked in another local hospital before I retired and we always had to maintain a professional appearance.

I was appalled by the way the staff discussed patients diagnosis and ongoing care in the waiting room amongst the waiting patients , there was no dignity and definitely  no confidentiality. I also witnessed one clinician -  not sure of their role as I did not see their badge ID -  taking bloods off a pregnant lady in the waiting area , there was no infection prevention control whatsoever, they  even put the vomiting bowl (that contained the necessary instruments for blood extraction) on the floor.

One positive note the cleaner did an excellent job cleaning main thoroughfare and surrounding areas .

Staff also walking from one department to another in aprons, masks and gloves, a definite break of code of practice in infection protection control.

Please can this be brought to the lead of the A&E as it is a very important point I want to make to ensure our NHS can revert to the once proud service of our country.

Dear atlasrw85,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. I apologise for the delayed response to your concerns, I wanted to ensure that the ED senior team saw your feedback before I responded to you as per your request.

The ED senior team wanted to thank you for your feedback and noted that ED does have a number of visiting speciality nurses and doctors in the department, who review and provide treatment to their patients whilst awaiting inpatient beds. ED will ensure your feedback is shared with the ED team and that we reinforce our uniform and infection control policies.

Thank you again for raising your concerns to us for wider learning.

Best wishes

Sophie Hutchings
ED Governance & Operational Support Manager
