"An incredibly poor service"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

My husband has had a condition that he was visiting the GP (who has been brilliant) about. The GP's advice was to attend A&E if his condition worsened, which he did, as it had and he was at the end of his tether.

We both work for the NHS, so don’t want to burden it unnecessarily. This man in his 50s with a horrendous headache, drooping eye, slurred speech and a deteriorating memory was given painkillers and told to go on his merry way.

I’m utterly appalled by this poor decision. I’m disgusted by the offhand way he was treated. He felt as though they felt he was making it up. He’s incredibly despondent and still in horrendous pain. I will absolutely be taking this further.

I understand fully that decisions have to be made, But clinical judgement appears to have been set aside and I feel he’s been classed as a time waster.

He explained that his GP has tried every conceivable pain medication in the last few weeks, but it fell on deaf ears.

An incredibly poor service that has left a man very low and in horrendous pain.

Thank you for taking the time to share this, and I am truly sorry to hear about the experience your husband had. What you have described is understandably distressing, and I fully appreciate the worry, frustration, and disappointment this situation has caused both of you — especially given his symptoms and the efforts you have already made to seek appropriate care.

Please be assured that we take concerns like this extremely seriously. I would like to look into this in more detail so that we can understand what happened and ensure your husband receives the support he needs. If you feel comfortable, I would be grateful if you could contact me directly, so we can discuss this further, either by phone or face to face — whichever you prefer.

Your feedback is important, and I want to make sure your concerns are addressed properly.
